Nice and Fit is pleased to present Melanie Gilligan’s

CRISIS IN THE CREDIT SYSTEM, a four-part drama about the current financial crisis. The work was made specifically to be viewed and distributed via internet and was released in Oct. 2008, coinciding with some of the most dramatic events of the global financial crisis thus far.

In the film, a major investment bank runs a brainstorming and role-playing session for its employees, asking them to come up with strategies for coping with today’s dangerous financial climate. Role-playing their way into increasingly bizarre scenarios, they find themselves drawing disturbing conclusions about the deeper significance of the crisis and its effects beyond the world of finance.

Using fiction to communicate what was left out of documentary accounts of the crisis, the short, TV-style episodes reflected the strangeness of life in which the financial abstractions governing our lives collapsed.

The film was conceived in episodic form in order to allow the sections to be posted on various internet sharing websites such as youtube. At Nice and Fit, the film’s four episodes are presented one after another.

Melanie Gilligan is a Canadian born artist and writer based in London. Her work has been shown internationally including at the ICA (London), Tate Britain, (London) the Sculpture Center (New York), Transmission Gallery (Glasgow). As a writer she contributes to magazines such as Texte zur Kunst, Mute and Artforum. Together with Ben Seymour she has formed the electro-pop duo “Petit Mal” which has recently released their first album as well as the single “Crisis in the Credit System”. The CD and single will be available for sale at the gallery.
