Ion Constas
November 12 – December 11. 2004
Opening reception: Friday, November 12, 7-9 pm
screening of “Killing me softly” at 8:30 pm

Nice & Fit gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Berlin based filmmaker and photographer Ion Constas.
The artist’s show revolves around his 18 min video “Killing me softly” which was filmed in its entirety in Berlin, largely
in the winter of 2004. This video is the second part of a work-in-progress which includes four shorts in different cities
(the first part “Catatonia” was filmed in Athens).
“Killing me softly” is an unusual investigation of sexual relations that is rich in evocative imagery, and completely unorthodox, both in terms of photography and narrative. The artist emphasizes the power of the mind to create connections between visual information and leads the audience through the actors and the soundtrack -that ranges from Albinoni to Peaches, Coldplay and Roberta Flack to Nick Cave.
Interestingly, in one of the first scenes Ion references Jean-Luc Godard by having one of the characters watch scenes from “Prenom Carmen” thus obliquely suggesting that one of the most fascinating aspects of filmmaking is “montage”.
Here the editing is the act of a free use of the imagination to produce “meaning”.
“Killing me softly” is a tender and complex work, horrifying and funny, with various layers: it is abstract and symbolic,
it touches on crucial psychoanalytic issues such as "ambivalence" and "projection", "memory" and "fantasy" while remaining humane and hopeful.
In addition to “Killing me softly” there will be a series of film stills and a mixed media installation also related to aspects of the video.
