THE FEBRUARY SHOW
Kerstin Brätsch, Jan Bünnig, Dana Chang, Ion Constas, Nico Ihlein,
David Kennedy-Cutler, William Nak, Hannes Schmidt
February 19 – March 31, 2005
opening: Saturday, February 19, 7-9 pm
8 artists come together in this group exhibition at Nice & Fit gallery: the February Show mixes sculptors
who show drawings, draftsmen who show sculptural work, painters who tightrope between figuration
and abstraction, painters who go “big”, conceptualists who chose to present their alter ego, filmmakers who show photographs.
What is it that connects Jan Bünnig’s “Disco ball”, Nico Ihlein’s drawings of nightmares, squirrels
and flat bodies with Hannes Schmidt’s “cancelled” black & white curly drawings of landscapes, Dana Chang’s “Sandwich” and bubble-babies? Or Ion Constas’ “Western” and “Paradise” grainy nudes with Kerstin Brätsch’s haunted house, David Kennedy-Cutler’s band-aid drawing and William Nak’s “Louis XIV”?
Possibly a new approach, whether pure or mixed in form, with original force. Whether intimate confessions (of one’s dreams, fears, sexual trials) or rhetorically highlighted aesthetic questions (the events of technical accomplishment and disavowal of), the works in “Die Februar Show” address autobiographical expression despite the fact that some have been produced in firm cultural contours. In that sense, although they, no doubt, also stem from the particularities of a milieu, they don’t belong to an “academy” or a set set (?) of values. |
